What Are Cashmere Scarves

The world's most
refined fibre,
woven into warmth

"Not all cashmere is equal. The difference between a Pashwrap piece and a department store imitation is the difference between a hand-written letter and a photocopy."

Cashmere scarves are among the most coveted textiles in the world — and for good reason. Woven from the ultra-fine undercoat of the Changthangi goat, a breed native to the Changthang plateau of Ladakh at altitudes above 4,500 metres, genuine cashmere measures just 12 to 14 microns in diameter. That extraordinary fineness produces a fabric of paradoxical character: lighter than wool, warmer than cotton, and softer than almost anything else that exists in nature.

Pashwrap cashmere scarves are made in the only place on earth where the full tradition of Kashmiri cashmere — from hand-combing and takli spinning to khatwa-loom weaving and natural dyeing — remains intact and uncompromised. Every scarf we make is produced in the old workshops of Srinagar and the surrounding villages of the Kashmir Valley, by artisans whose families have practised their specific discipline for generations. Our founder's family has been part of this world since the 1960s — three generations who know this craft not as a business, but as a way of life.

Why Pashwrap

What makes our
cashmere scarves
incomparable

Every claim we make about our pure cashmere scarves is verifiable — by touch, by documentation, and by independent fibre testing available on request. These are not marketing assertions. They are manufacturing facts.

I
100% Pure Cashmere

No blends. No synthetics. No silk padding. Every Pashwrap cashmere scarf contains exclusively hand-combed Changthangi fibre. Independent micron testing is available on request — we have nothing to hide and everything to prove.

II
Handwoven on Traditional Looms

Every premium cashmere scarf in our collection is woven on a hand-operated khatwa loom in Srinagar. No jacquard machines. No automated shuttles. The rhythm, tension, and character of each piece belong entirely to its maker.

III
Warmth Without Weight

A Changthangi cashmere scarf weighs a fraction of its wool equivalent while providing superior thermal insulation. The fibre's hollow structure traps body heat without bulk — the ideal travel companion and year-round luxury accessory.

IV
Incomparable Softness

At 12–14 microns, genuine Kashmiri cashmere is immediately recognisable against bare skin as something genuinely different. The softness is not a finish applied after weaving — it is an intrinsic property of the fibre itself.

V
Three Generations, One Craft

Our founder's grandfather began in Kashmiri textiles in the 1960s. That means every sourcing decision, every artisan relationship, and every quality judgement at Pashwrap is made by someone whose family has lived inside this craft for three generations.

VI
Lab Micron Testing on Request

We welcome scrutiny. Any Pashwrap cashmere scarf can be submitted for independent third-party fibre testing — the only objective proof of fibre fineness and species purity. Ask us, and we will arrange it. That is not a common offer.

The Craftsmanship Story

Made the way it has always been made

The story of a Pashwrap cashmere scarf begins not in a workshop but on a plateau. Each spring, nomadic Changpa herders — families our founder's family has sourced directly from for decades — gently comb, never shear, the soft undercoat from their goats on the Changthang plateau of Ladakh. A single animal yields perhaps 150 grams of usable fibre. A single handmade cashmere scarf requires the yield of three to four animals.

That raw pashm travels to the villages surrounding Srinagar, where women with decades of experience sort it by touch — separating the finest fibres from coarser guard hairs with a patience no machine can replicate. It is then hand-spun on the takli, a simple wooden spindle, into yarn of breathtaking evenness.

The dyed yarn reaches the hands of a master weaver, who has spent years learning a single discipline. No step in this process can be rushed without consequence. The master knows this. It is the reason Pashwrap scarves exist at all.

How to Wear It

A cashmere scarf for every chapter of the day

01
Everyday Luxury

The lightest cashmere scarves in the collection disappear into a coat pocket and emerge, fold-free, whenever the temperature drops or an occasion demands something more considered. Understated. Impeccable. Always appropriate.

02
Travel Companion

A luxury cashmere scarf is the most versatile travel item you can carry — blanket on long-haul flights, cover at cold restaurants, layer in unpredictable climates, and a touch of composure in every city you land in.

03
The Art of Gifting

A Pashwrap cashmere scarf says: I chose something lasting over something convenient. It arrives in heritage packaging, carries a story, and will be worn — and remembered — for decades.

The gift that outlasts the occasion

There is a particular quality to a gift that required thought, patience, and discernment — qualities that a pure cashmere scarf embodies before it is even opened. It is not a gift worn once and forgotten. It is a gift that becomes part of someone's daily life, softening with every wear, deepening in meaning with every year. When you give a Pashwrap cashmere scarf, you are giving the warmth of a Himalayan plateau and the skill of a Kashmiri craftsperson — wrapped in one.

Questions Answered

Everything you should know about cashmere scarves

Genuine cashmere is one of the most misrepresented materials in fashion. We believe an informed customer makes better decisions — and asks better questions of every brand they buy from, including us.

A cashmere scarf is woven from the ultra-fine undercoat of the Changthangi goat — native to the Changthang plateau of Ladakh, where winters reach −40°C. The animal's response to extreme cold is a dense, impossibly fine undercoat measuring 12 to 14 microns. Pashwrap cashmere scarves are made exclusively from 100% pure, hand-combed Changthangi pashm, direct-sourced from the same Ladakhi herder families our family has worked with across three generations. Explore our pashmina scarves for related styles.
Real cashmere is extraordinarily soft against bare skin — not merely smooth, but soft in a way that feels weightless and warm simultaneously. Laboratory micron testing is the only definitive method. Every Pashwrap cashmere scarf is available for independent third-party fibre testing on request — we arrange this ourselves. Our three-generation family background in Kashmiri textiles means every piece is hand-verified before dispatch. Avoid anything described as "cashmere blend" or "cashmere feel."
A genuine, pure cashmere scarf — properly made and properly cared for — will last twenty years or more. When the cost of a Pashwrap scarf is divided across years of regular wear, it is one of the most economical luxury purchases a wardrobe can contain. Our pure pashmina shawls represent a similar long-term value in a larger format.
Hand wash only, in cool water with a gentle pH-neutral detergent such as baby shampoo. Do not wring, twist, or tumble dry. Lay flat on a clean towel, reshape while damp, and dry in shade. Store folded in a breathable cotton or linen bag — never hung. Remove any pills with a cashmere comb. With this care, a Pashwrap premium cashmere scarf will remain as beautiful in twenty years as it is today.
Kashmiri cashmere is distinguished by three factors: the specific Changthangi goat breed from the Ladakhi plateau; traditional hand-processing techniques developed over five centuries in Kashmir; and the mineral-rich glacial water used in washing, which gives the fibre its characteristic softness and natural sheen. At Pashwrap, we source directly from the herder families on that same plateau — cutting out every trader and middleman. Our pashmina wraps showcase the full range of what this unique origin produces.
Pashmina is the Kashmiri word for the soft undercoat of the Changthangi goat — the same fibre known in the West as cashmere. At Pashwrap, both words mean exactly the same thing: 100% Changthangi fibre, handwoven in Kashmir, direct-sourced from Ladakhi herders by a family that has been part of this trade for three generations. Explore our full range of pashmina scarves alongside our cashmere collection.
All natural fibre, including the finest cashmere, will produce some pilling in areas of friction. This is a sign of genuine fibre, not a defect. High-quality Kashmiri cashmere produces minimal, stable pilling easily removed with a soft cashmere comb. To minimise pilling: rotate wear, avoid rough textures against the fabric, and store flat.
